About the museum
The Galleria di Mina is an underground First World War work built between 1916 and 1917 by Italian soldiers to defend the territory against a possible invasion. It is part of the line of fortifications of the so-called Frontiera Nord (Northern Frontier) and lies in Verceia, on the edge of the Valchiavenna.
The main gallery is about 200 metres long; the network includes four branches, eighteen side passages, sixteen mine shafts, six chambers, three ventilation ducts and four cisterns. In the shafts the explosives were to be placed to cut road and rail links. The structures are remarkably well preserved and striking for the precision of their construction.
Today the gallery is open to the public on bookable tours. The entrance overlooks Lake Mezzola, opposite the Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve, and connects to the Strada dei Cavalli, an ancient link road.
