About the museum
Val Codera, in the province of Sondrio near Novate Mezzola, has no roads for vehicles: its villages can only be reached on foot. The museum opened in May 2011, during the celebrations for the thirtieth anniversary of the Amici della Val Codera association, which runs it and has worked for decades to safeguard the valley.
The main headquarters is in Codera, on the ground floor of the Casa di Valle and in two old buildings in the village. The rooms show household furnishings and tools, textile work with antique looms, livestock farming and dairy production, a former school, local crafts and a mineral collection (including aquamarine and garnet), as well as a section devoted to the chestnut, the staple food of Alpine communities.
A second section is in San Giorgio, in a former cowshed with hayloft that the association bought and restored from 2005 onwards. It houses objects donated by families of the valley and continues to grow. Since 2023 the project “San Giorgio racconta” (San Giorgio Tells) has also offered a digital account of the village’s most significant places.
