About the museum
The gallery was built in 1907 on land donated by Sir Thomas Hanbury, to a design by the London architect William Caroe, in neo-medieval style. The building has two rooms: the first was designed for temporary exhibitions, lectures and small concerts, while the inner room is the West Gallery proper.
Richard Whateley West, born in Dublin in 1848 and a self-taught painter, was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and the Divisionists and established himself as a painter of views and seascapes. He came to Alassio in 1885 and settled there in 1888, in a seaside villa called Casa Bianca, where he painted the fishermen hauling their nets onto the beach. He died suddenly in 1905, and his friends founded the gallery in his memory.
The works came through the Second World War unscathed and returned to the building in 2001; after the war it had housed the municipal library. The collection of about seventy paintings is considered the most important and complete dedicated to the artist. Many canvases depict Alassio and the Riviera between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
