About the museum
The Galleria storica traces the tradition of the Corpo dei Pompieri di Chiavenna, founded in 1868 as the Civico Corpo dei Pompieri. In 1991, for the fiftieth anniversary of the Corpo nazionale dei vigili del fuoco, the staff of the local detachment gathered rescue equipment and documents on the history of firefighting in the Valchiavenna from the mid-19th century onwards.
The first rooms were set up in the basement of the new fire station in Mese and completed in October 2002, when the Gruppo storico pompieri Valchiavenna, the volunteer association that looks after the museum, was founded. In 2006 the Comune di Chiavenna made available the former professional mechanics institute, with over 600 m² of covered space in three sheds.
The display is run by the staff of the Distaccamento dei Vigili del Fuoco di Mese, heir to the Corpo dei Pompieri di Chiavenna. Among the most significant objects is the hand pump “MERA 3”, in service from 1883 until after the Second World War and rediscovered in 1989 during the fire of a farmhouse.
