About the museum

The Mu.Vi.S. is housed in the Palàzz, a historic building of sixteenth-century origin in Campodolcino, in the hamlet of Corti. It is owned by the Consorzio delle Frazioni Corti e Acero, an association of local families founded in the eighteenth century with tasks of managing the territory and providing social assistance. In 1786 Abbot Foppoli donated the palace to the two hamlets for purposes of public utility and had the internal chapel built there, dedicated to the Madonna del Buon Consiglio and to Saint Anthony of Padua. At the end of the nineteenth century the Palàzz hosted a vocational school of minor arts founded by Saint Luigi Guanella.

The museum’s route tells the story of the Val San Giacomo and of the Via Spluga, the ancient trade and travel route that crosses the pass of the same name, starting from the accounts of travellers on the “passo sublime” (sublime pass). Other sections are devoted to rural architecture, trades and traditions, the birth of tourism and winter sports, the prehistoric site of Pian dei Cavalli, geology and the alpine environment.

The museum offers educational workshops for schools and activities for children.
