About the museum
Villa De Ponti is a house of the first half of the 20th century, in an eclectic style with Liberty references, surrounded by a large park with trees arranged around an elliptical ring that encloses a large grassy clearing. The property, close to the barium salts factory, was linked from 1908 to 1975 to the Milanese De Ponti family, who acquired the surface area in 1923, and it is one of the patrician villas lined up along the provincial road to Lecco.
In the 1990s the Comunità Montana acquired the building and designated the park as a botanical garden, placing it within the Ecomuseo della Valle San Martino. The construction, between 1989 and 1992, of the road that passes under the railway cut the park in two.
The botanical garden covers about one hectare and hosts about 500 species, native and exotic, almost all with identification labels, mainly woody plants, numerous conifers, a sector of useful plants (medicinal, aromatic, fruit-bearing), a bed of Mediterranean species and collections of herbaceous plants such as daylilies and irises. The self-guided route is aided by twelve large thematic panels; the garden is also used as a teaching tool for schools.
