About the museum
Conceived in 1983 by the administrators of the Parco Monte Barro as a museum of agricultural activities, the MEAB opened in 2003 under the broader name Museo Etnografico dell'Alta Brianza. As early as 1985 the Park Consortium had identified the farming hamlet of Camporeso, of architectural and environmental value, as the ideal place to house it; in 1991 the Consortium bought the former Fatebenefratelli complex, made up of three rural buildings with about 800 square metres usable for exhibitions, plus adjoining farmland.
The museum uses the method of anthropology: researchers meet and interview farmers, workers, fishermen, hunters, spinners, housewives and cooks, and collect their stories, objects, photographs and films. For this reason it describes itself as a “museum of voices and gestures” and as a museum of society, which promotes encounters between generations and the participation of the community.
The collections comprise about 1,500 objects, largely donated, as well as documents, historical photographs, films and recordings. Alongside the long-term displays, the museum offers publications, documentaries, a virtual tour and initiatives such as the programme “Voci, gesti, culture”.
