About the museum
The museum is in Ca' Martì, in the historic centre of Carenno, in a building that probably dates back to the 15th century, built as a private house on the edge of the medieval core. At the beginning of the 20th century it housed the town hall and the primary school; it was later a dwelling, shop and warehouse, with alterations made between the 15th and 19th centuries.
The museum opened in 2008 together with the route La Valle dei muratori (The Valley of the Masons), with sixteen stops in the area. The building is owned by the Comune di Carenno and managed by the Associazione Gruppo Muratori e Amici di Ca' Martì. Expert masons helped set up the displays and pass on their knowledge to young people through a training building site (cantiere scuola).
The route tells, through objects, documents and images, the life, work and technical skills of the masons of Carenno and the Valle San Martino between the 19th and 20th centuries, with the social life, hardships and emigration linked to the trade. On the ground floor there are rooms dedicated to reception, the history of the building and the natural resources for traditional building; on the first floor restored spaces are displayed, together with the remains of a 15th-century fresco with the emblem of San Bernardino.
