About the museum
For almost two centuries Villa Manzoni was the main residence of the Manzoni family. Its story begins in 1621, when the writer's great-great-grandfather, Giacomo Maria, moved from the Valsassina to Lecco; here, in 1736, Don Pietro, the father of Alessandro, was also born. The villa has a façade with sandstone mouldings, comprises farm buildings and a noble wing, and includes a park that was once much larger.
In 1818 the Manzonis sold the property to the silk entrepreneur Giuseppe Scola, who kept its original appearance and its identity as a literary site, already a destination for learned visitors because of its connection with I promessi sposi (The Betrothed). From the rooms upstairs the young Manzoni could see the lake and the crests of the Resegone, memories that many believe inspired the opening of the novel.
In 1940 the villa was declared a national monument. It was transferred to the Comune di Lecco in the 1970s and became a museum in the 1980s; a restoration and adaptation project in 2019 made possible the new Museo Manzoniano on the ground floor.
The route combines the house museum and the literary museum, with architecture, furniture, paintings, prints, documents, photographs and period volumes, together with multimedia installations featuring animated paintings, film excerpts and musical settings.
