About the museum
The gipsoteca (plaster cast gallery) holds original plaster models of the sculptures of Giulio Monteverde (Bistagno 1837 – Rome 1917), one of the leading Italian sculptors of the second half of the 19th century. Much of the collection comes from the artist’s Roman studio, where two large halls were devoted to displaying the plasters, a kind of private museum; in 1919 his daughters donated the collection to the city of Genoa, in accordance with their father’s wishes.
In the course of the 20th century an important part of the collection came to Bistagno through donations and loans from the Comune di Genova, forming the core of the gipsoteca. The works document the main stages of the sculptor’s career between 1870 and 1917 and include the models of celebrated works such as the “Colombo giovinetto”, “Il genio di Franklin”, “Jenner che inocula il vaccino” and the “Angelo Oneto”.
The museum is on the first floor of Palazzo Leale, a 19th-century building that once housed the village schools; the present display dates from 2001 and extends over seven rooms. It is one of the five museum plaster cast galleries in Piedmont and is part of the network “Gipsoteche in Luce”.
