Temporarily closed. According to the Acqui Musei listing, the site is temporarily closed to the public because of structural works; it was opened exceptionally on 28–29 September 2024 for the European Heritage Days. No reopening date is given.

About the museum

The pool was part of a vast thermal complex of the ancient Aquae Statiellae in the imperial period. It was identified in 1913, during the construction of the new arcades, immediately south of the present Hotel Nuove Terme, but at the time it was only partly explored, then partly backfilled and partly incorporated into the basement of the building under construction. Further excavations in the 1970s brought to light additional structures; only the research of 2001 fully uncovered the basin and confirmed the greater extent of the thermal complex.

The pool is rectangular and measures about 13 × 6.5 metres. The basin is cut directly into the rock and enclosed by a sturdy perimeter wall of rubble stone that supported the roof. Three tiered steps run around the entire perimeter, from which one could descend into the water. It was probably covered by a vault lined with glass-paste mosaic tesserae and fitted with large glazed windows. The complex, outside the Roman settlement, stood beside the amphitheatre, which has not yet been excavated, and could easily be reached along the Via Aemilia Scauri.
