About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Cuttica in Cassine, a building erected in the 18th century by the Marquis Cuttica di Cassine in a style midway between Rococo and Neoclassicism. The palace soon became a meeting place for the liveliest minds in the town. In the Napoleonic period it was chosen as a residence by the French generals Chasseloup and Despinois; in 1806 it became the seat of the Prefettura di Marengo. Later bought by the municipality, it housed the Prefecture, the provincial administration, the finance offices and later also the post office and the court.
The 18th-century rooms hold some of the most important collections of the Museo Civico di Alessandria: the pre-Roman and Roman archaeological collection of Cesare Di Negro Carpani, a precious group of illuminated choir books and sacred vestments, and significant examples of sacred painting from the 16th and 17th centuries. A historic core of the museum is also linked to a donation of 1854, comprising paintings, miniatures and drawings. Of great importance for the museum’s history is the cartoon of the Apotheosis of Napoleon by Francesco Mensi, who was also director of the Pinacoteca. One section is dedicated to the Gabinetto delle stampe antiche, moderne e contemporanee (print room of old, modern and contemporary prints).
As well as the permanent display, the palace offers guided tours and educational activities for schools, and hosts temporary exhibitions and lectures.
