Ancient medieval broletto (civic palace) of Alessandria, seat of the Fondazione CRA, with an art collection from the 19th and 20th centuries and archaeological finds.
Marking ten years since the death of Umberto Eco, more than forty analogue photographs by Fabio Menino Hofmann show mists, fields and farmhouses of the Monferrato. The images engage with quotations and objects linked to the novel “La misteriosa fiamma della regina Loana”.
About the museum
The Palatium Vetus is the ancient broletto (medieval civic palace) of Alessandria, a corner of the Middle Ages preserved in the heart of the city, in Piazza della Libertà. Today it is the seat of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria, which reopened its spaces to the public in 2012 after a careful restoration designed by Gae Aulenti. Medieval frescoes were recovered during the works.
Excavations carried out during the restoration yielded finds from the 14th and 15th centuries, now displayed in the old Ghiacciaia (ice house). The Foundation also holds a collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings by artists linked to the Alessandria area, including Pellizza da Volpedo, Morbelli, Bistolfi and Carrà, spanning the period from the late 18th to the late 20th century.
The visit includes the art collections, the archaeological finds of the Ghiacciaia and the rooms of the Broletto. Free guided tours and educational activities for schools are organised.
