About the museum
The Teatro delle Scienze is a city museum that brings together in a single display the Museo di Scienze Naturali (Natural Sciences Museum) and the Planetarium with astronomy laboratory. It is run by ASM Costruire Insieme for the Municipality of Alessandria and is part of the network of museums of the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali in Turin.
The visit begins with a video on the origin and evolution of the Earth and continues along a route among rock samples, minerals and fossils to observe and touch, with reproductions of volcanic eruptions. The collections include mineralogical and palaeontological finds from the Alessandria area, including a fossil mammoth molar, a large ornithological display case recreating day and night habitats, and a transparent cylinder with butterflies from around the world. At the centre of the room a scale model reproduces the river environment of the province; an eco-acoustic project accompanies the route with the sounds of nature.
In the Planetarium, with a fixed dome and the Digistar Lite digital system updated in 2023, the night sky, constellations and astronomical phenomena are projected. Activities are run together with the Gruppo Astrofili “Galileo” (Galileo amateur astronomers’ group). A teaching room offers simulations of planetary motion, eclipses and tides.
