About the museum
Industria was a Roman city on the bank of the Po, near its confluence with the Dora Baltea. It is mentioned by Pliny the Elder in the “Naturalis historia”, who places it near the Ligurian village of Bodincomagus, the “market on the Po”. In the Augustan age it became an important hub for river transport of goods. The regular urban layout dates to the end of the 1st century BC or the beginning of the 1st century AD, but the settlement was probably founded earlier, towards the end of the 2nd century BC.
The visitable area extends along the two main perpendicular streets, the cardo and the decumanus, flanked by remains of the settlement. The most distinctive feature is the sanctuary dedicated to the Egyptian deities Isis and Serapis, which sets Industria apart from the other Roman cities of Piedmont and northern Italy: a large semicircular space, originally surrounded by porticoes, ends in a monumental exedra flanked by two small temples.
The area is part of the cultural sites run by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali del Piemonte. Guided tours are organised by volunteers of the Associazione Culturale Athena.
