About the museum
The Ipogeo di Piagge is an underground chamber carved into tuff in the hamlet of Piagge, in the municipality of Terre Roveresche. It has a cross-shaped plan with symmetrically arranged arms, niches, and relief decorations with geometric and symbolic motifs on the walls and vault.
The origin of the site is uncertain: its layout and symbols suggest a place of worship from the early Christian era, possibly used as a refuge by the first Christians, while other theories link it to initiation or esoteric rites of the medieval period.
The cavity was discovered in 1996. After about four years of safety and restoration work on the entrance area, it was opened to the public in 2016; the entrance hall today also hosts exhibitions of various kinds. Access is from the area of the castle's medieval entrance, by descending a ramp of tuff steps.
