About the museum
On the morning of 25 August 1944, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, accompanied by General Alexander, commander of the British VIII Corps, climbed to the castle of Montemaggiore to observe the deployment of troops in the Metauro valley, ready for the offensive against the Gothic Line. That same night operation “Olive” began, which led to the breakthrough of the last German defensive position in Italy.
The museum holds photographs, written testimonies, diaries, official documents, relics and period military equipment, keeping the memory of those events alive. A particularly significant photograph shows Churchill and Alexander, seen from behind on a rough bench, looking out over the Metauro valley. A local tradition also places the battle of 207 BC, in which the Carthaginian Asdrubale died, in the same area.
The museum is housed in the former church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, on the village’s main street.
