About the museum
The Rocca Roveresca of Mondavio was commissioned by Giovanni della Rovere at the end of the 15th century and is attributed to the military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Construction most probably took place between 1482 and 1492, and the fortress was never completed. It later served as a papal prison until the 1940s.
The rocca was never besieged or bombarded and has survived to the present day in excellent condition, with its distinctive hourglass shape. Inside is the museum, in two sections: the armoury, with weapons for attack and siege, armour, uniforms and evidence of military strategies, and the historical re-enactment museum, with scenes of Renaissance life reconstructed with costumed mannequins.
In the moat a war machine built according to the drawings of Francesco di Giorgio Martini is on display. Every year on 14 and 15 August the rocca hosts a costumed historical re-enactment.
