About the museum

The civic museum and picture gallery of Mondavio is located in the 16th-century cloister of the former convent of San Francesco, from which the exhibition rooms are reached. The art collection consists mainly of works from religious buildings: paintings, furnishings, liturgical objects and stone elements.

Among the pieces on display are paintings that originally hung in the church and convent of the Capuchins, who settled in Mondavio in 1577, and a wooden tabernacle carved and inlaid by the friars themselves. On the upper floor is the old convent library, from which come the rare editions from the 15th to the 18th century shown in the museum’s rooms, including incunabula and 16th-century books.

A volume of particular interest is the “De recta paschae celebratione” (the “Paulina”) by Paolo di Middelburg, an astronomer, humanist and mathematician at the Montefeltro court, printed in 1513 in Fossombrone by Ottaviano Petrucci, the inventor of music printing with movable type.
