About the museum
Iuvanum stands on a plateau at about 972 metres above sea level, facing the Maiella. Traces of settlement go back at least to the 4th–3rd century BC. The present layout of the town dates to the mid-1st century BC, after the centre became a municipium. An earthquake damaged it in 354, but it was inhabited until at least the 6th century.
The sacred area includes at least two temples and a sanctuary, on which a Benedictine monastery, later Cistercian, was subsequently built. The forum, of Julio-Claudian date, is paved with local limestone and flanked by the basilica and part of the tabernae. A bronze inscription commemorates the benefactor Erennio Capitone and his heir Erennia Proiecta. The theatre and the roads are also visible.
The archaeological museum, on the southern slope of the hill of the temples, displays a selection of finds from the town and its territory.
