Castello di Roccascalegna

Medieval castle on a rocky spur above Roccascalegna, with towers, a chapel and the legend of Baron Corvo de Corvis.

Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

The castle stands on a rocky spur overlooking the village. It was built between the 11th and 12th centuries, enlarging a watchtower of Lombard origin. The first documented mention dates from 1525, in connection with restoration works. The feudal families later strengthened it: the Annecchino added a round tower; the Carafa, who held it from 1531 to 1600, had the chapel of the Santissimo Rosario built in 1577 and improved the collection of rainwater; the Corvi, lords from 1600 to 1717, intervened after 1705 on the drawbridge and the entrance.

According to tradition, in 1646 Baron Corvo de Corvis claimed the ius primae noctis and was wounded by a bride or by the bridegroom in disguise. A hand-shaped mark on a rock is still pointed out as the baron’s imprint.

After centuries of abandonment, with various collapses such as that of the “torre del cuore” in 1940, in 1985 the last owners, the Croce Nanni family, donated the castle to the Municipality. Restoration, begun in the 1990s, was completed in 1996. Today the castle is open every day, run by the Pro Loco; a steep staircase carved into the rock leads to the entrance, and the route includes the towers, the walls and the chapel with the cistern.
