About the museum
Giassàre are circular pits for storing ice, found throughout the Lessinia. In winter, ice was gathered from nearby ponds and deposited in these deep pits, to be sold in summer, mainly in Verona: an ancient and hard labour typical of this area, which turned the water used for livestock into a source of income.
La Giassara dei Carcerèri is in a small green valley near the hamlet of Carcereri, in Cerro Veronese. It was restored by the Municipality, which rebuilt in its original form the oval basin, the sloping portico and the walls. Today it works as a museum of traditional labour, where visitors can understand how the giassaroi stored and sold ice.
Nearby are other giassàre, such as those of Modesto at Roverè Veronese and of Grietz at Bosco Chiesanuova, linked by a theme trail that starts from the church square in Cerro.
