About the museum
The permanent exhibition of the municipality of Gambassi Terme presents the first results of historical and archaeological research into the glassmaking activity that for centuries characterised the Val d’Elsa. In the late Middle Ages the area was one of the three known glass centres in Italy, together with Altare and Murano, and the glassmakers of Gambassi, known as gambasini, worked throughout the peninsula from the 14th century onwards.
The exhibition is divided into three sections. The first offers an introduction to the history of glass in Italy from protohistory to the 16th century, with attention to Tuscan and Valdelsan production. The second illustrates pre-industrial technology, with a three-dimensional panel on the production process and with tools, crucibles, production waste and glass objects from furnaces active between the 13th and 16th centuries.
The third section reconstructs the daily life of the glassworkers through objects and food remains from the excavations at Germagnana and at Gambassi, in Via delle Campane and Piazza del Castello.
