About the museum
The museum opened in 1999 in the Casalone, a rustic building beside the sanctuary of Santa Verdiana, patron saint of Castelfiorentino and the town’s main place of worship. It spreads over two floors and four rooms and holds works from the churches and confraternities of the area.
Castelfiorentino was governed by Florence from the early 12th century and was a political outpost on the border with Siena, so its ties with Florentine culture are visible in the works on display. The collection includes paintings, illuminated codices, more than a hundred silver objects, vestments, altar cloths and sacred vessels, produced over five centuries.
Among the best-known pieces are the gold-ground panel of Santa Verdiana, considered the oldest image of the saint, the Madonna and Child attributed to Cimabue, works by Taddeo Gaddi, Francesco Granacci and Alesso di Benozzo, and 14th-century antiphonaries linked to Florentine illuminators such as Jacopo del Casentino.
