About the museum
The exhibition presents the first results of historical and archaeological research into a craft that shaped the whole Val d’Elsa for centuries. At national level, this area was one of the three best-known glass-making centres, alongside Altare and Murano, and the “gambassini” glasses were valued and also produced elsewhere by glassmakers from Gambassi who were active throughout Italy from the 14th century onwards.
The route is divided into three sections. The first gives an overview of glass production in Italy from protohistory to the 16th century, with attention to Tuscany and the Valdelsa. The second explains pre-industrial glass technology: local raw materials, furnaces, tools and the shaping of objects, with a three-dimensional educational panel and crucibles, production waste and objects from the excavations. The third reconstructs the daily life of glassmakers between the 14th and 16th centuries through everyday objects and food remains found at Germagnana and Gambassi.
The exhibition includes about 3,000 archaeological finds and is part of the Sistema museale Museo Diffuso Empolese Valdelsa.
