About the museum
The Landesfürstliche Burg (Princely Castle) was built in the second half of the 15th century by Duke Sigismondo of Tyrol, known as “the Rich in Coins”, as an urban residence. It stands behind the town hall, in the historic centre of Merano, at the foot of Monte Benedetto, and resembles a fortified house with a light enclosure rather than a true castle; for this reason it was often called an “Ansitz”. Until the 16th century it served as a princely residence, and in 1516 it hosted Emperor Massimiliano I.
After various changes of ownership the complex fell into ruin, until the Comune di Merano bought it in 1875. Between 1878 and 1880 it was restored to a design by the architect Friedrich von Schmidt, also known for the restoration of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, and was then opened to the public.
Today it houses the castle museum, which offers a view of late medieval life, with majolica stoves, wood-panelled stube, chambers and the ladies-in-waiting's rooms. The furnishings date from the Gothic and Renaissance periods; weapons such as lances and halberds, historical musical instruments, antique furniture, kitchen utensils and portraits are also preserved. The castle chapel contains a 16th-century fresco. Remains of the ancient city walls can be seen in front of the castle.
