About the museum
The Museo civico di Merano was founded in 1900 and is one of the oldest cultural institutions in South Tyrol. Since April 2015 its collections have been housed in the Palais Mamming, a Baroque palazzo built in 1675 for the Barons von Mamming on the square next to the parish church of San Nicolò, now restored and extended with elements of contemporary architecture.
The museum holds more than one hundred thousand objects, about two hundred thousand photographs and a Tyrolensia collection of around 30,000 volumes. The permanent exhibition unfolds along a circular route divided into 27 thematic sections: it begins with prehistory, passes through the Middle Ages and the Baroque and reaches the modern age and contemporary art, illustrating the history of Merano and the Burgraviato (Burggrafenamt).
Among the most curious pieces are an Egyptian mummy, the collection of Sudanese weapons of the adventurer Slatin Pascha, the prototype typewriter devised by Peter Mitterhofer and a funerary mask of Napoleon. The collection also includes works by artists such as Friedrich Wasmann and Leo Putz, minerals, fossils and photographs. The museum also offers guided tours and a wide educational programme for schools of all levels.
