About the museum
The museum is housed in the synagogue on Via Schiller, an Art Nouveau (Liberty style) building of 1901 that is still a place of worship. The museum, synagogue and Jewish cemetery form a single ensemble linked to the history of the city's Jewish community.
The community was particularly active in the second half of the 19th century, when Jewish doctors contributed to Merano's reputation as a spa town, and the community built a cemetery, a synagogue and a sanatorium. Jewish tourism played an important role until the 1930s, and among the city's guests was Chaim Weizmann, future first president of Israel.
The exhibition rooms, redesigned by the Merano artist Ulrich Egger, are organised into three sections devoted to history, religion and the Shoah. Documents and objects, including a Torah scroll probably from the 15th century and tefillin, also recount the persecution under the Nazis, the post-war reconstruction and the cultural life of the community today.
