About the museum
Wine has been grown on the Schloss Rametz estate since 1227, and in 1860 the first Pinot Noir vineyard of South Tyrol was planted there. In the 19th century the castle was redesigned in Tudor style under Franz Flarer, and it hosted distinguished guests such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
Since 1980 the ground floor and cellars have housed a private museum of viticulture, which was expanded a few years ago. Four rooms show the seasonal cycle of work in the vineyard, with tools for the vines, the grape harvest, transport, cereal cultivation and pest control. A section with images and antique tools is devoted to South Tyrolean speck.
The visit begins with a stroll among the pergolas, goes down into the 18th-century cellar with its porphyry floor and continues into the modern cellar, where the estate’s wines are tasted with Kaiserspeck.
