About the museum
Brunnenburg Castle stands on a glacial debris cone below Castel Tirolo and was built in 1250 by Wilhelm Tarant. It then passed through various owners: in 1356 to Heinrich von Bopfingen, in 1421 to Ulrich Putsch (later bishop of Bressanone) and from 1457 to Hans Kripp, whose family held it for about 350 years. In 1884 it was bought by the mayor of Tirolo, Michael Sonnenburger, and in 1903 by the entrepreneur Karl Schwickert, who had it rebuilt; after his death in 1927 it fell into ruin again.
Later the de Rachewiltz family made it their residence and a centre for cultural exchange. Between 1958 and 1962 the American poet Ezra Pound completed his work there, the Cantos.
Today the castle houses the South Tyrolean Agricultural Museum, which, under the motto “Vom Leben am Steilhang” (life on the steep slope), tells the story of mountain farm work and life.
