About the museum
The antiquarium building was constructed in 1977 to house finds from excavations begun in 1952 in the Roman city of Lucus Feroniae, near Capena. It was later enlarged to allow public display. The first display, opened in 1998, included the sculptural cycle from the shrine of the Augustales.
A project funded by Arcus SpA renewed the route, which is now divided into six sections, with restorations and multimedia displays. The project also covers the nearby monumental areas and the villa of the Volusii Saturnini, which belonged to a senatorial family.
The museum displays many materials never shown before. Among the highlights are the 1:1 reconstruction of the shrine, a funerary monument with a gladiatorial relief in the entrance hall, and virtual reconstructions of the city and the villa in the Sala delle Capriate.
