About the museum
The Casa protostorica di Fidene is in the north-eastern quadrant of Rome, in the area of ancient Fidene. The original dwelling, dating approximately between 850 and 800 BC, was excavated by the Soprintendenza archeologica di Roma between 1986 and 1993. A fire had destroyed it, sealing its furnishings, and this is precisely what made it possible to know the structure and the domestic equipment in detail.
The hut was rectangular, roughly 6.2 by 5.2 metres, with an internal floor area of about 30 square metres. After excavation the original structure was covered over to protect it, and beside it a reconstruction of the building and its furnishings was built, using analogous techniques, shapes and materials, within a green area.
Among the finds are the remains of a cat, considered the oldest known domestic cat in Italy.
