About the museum
The Museo Archeologico Territoriale di Monterotondo was founded in May 2003 and is located in the centre of the town, in Piazza Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale. Part of the material comes from clandestine excavations in the surrounding area, recovered by the Carabinieri, the Polizia and the Guardia di Finanza.
The collection brings together finds from archaeological investigations of the territory, in particular those from the ancient road that linked Nomentum to Eretum and runs through the Macchia di Gattaceca nature reserve. Among the material are the remains of Roman funerary buildings dating from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD.
The display is spread over four rooms: pottery from Crustumerium, bucchero vessels of Etruscan type from various origins, marble and travertine heads from Eretum and Nomentum, three reconstructed tombs with skeletons or skeletal fragments from Nomentum, and a model of a pre-Roman hut from Fidenae.
