About the museum
MAF – Museo Acqua Franca is a contemporary art project created in 2011 inside the Nosedo wastewater treatment plant in Milan, in Via San Dionigi. It was conceived and directed by Ornella Piluso, who works as an artist under the name topylabrys, within the activities of the cultural association Arte da mangiare mangiare Arte, active in Milan since 1996. The plant is run by MM Spa, with which the museum cooperates.
The permanent collection comprises about thirty large site-specific outdoor installations on the themes of water, sustainability and the environment. Many are made from second-choice materials provided by companies, in research that combines art and the circular economy; others are made from organic materials that change with the seasons. Alongside them is an archive collection on the activity of the association and the museum.
Every year the Festival Internazionale dei Depuratori (International Wastewater Treatment Plants Festival) brings temporary exhibitions, performances and meetings to the MAF, with guided visits to the works and the plant. The museum presents itself as a living space open to the city, which uses the language of art to engage with the goals of the Agenda per il Clima 2030.
