About the museum
The MAPP was founded in the former Paolo Pini psychiatric hospital, in the Affori district of Milan. The project was devised in 1993 by the professionals who founded the association ARCA, in collaboration with the Mental Health Department of the Niguarda Hospital, with artistic direction by Marco Meneguzzo. The idea was to turn the former asylum into a place of encounter, where professional artists and people with psychological distress could work together. The museum was inaugurated on 25 May 1995.
The permanent collection consists of murals, installations and sculptures placed in the park, outside and inside the pavilions, and is enriched with new works every year. It includes works by more than 150 Italian and foreign artists, among them Enrico Baj, Emilio Tadini, Günter Brus and Martin Disler. Another part of the heritage consists of “four-hand” works made by artists and participants of the Botteghe d'Arte, the creative workshops based in Pavilion 7.
The MAPP is the art section of the Museo Regionale della Psichiatria of the Niguarda Hospital and was recognised in 2007 by Regione Lombardia as a museum collection. In the same year the City of Milan awarded it the Ambrogino d'Oro. Today the museum coexists with the social and health activities that take place in the area, and offers guided tours led by the Divulgatori d'Arte, participants of the Botteghe d'Arte.
