About the museum

The MAPP arose from a project launched at the end of 1993 by the association ARCA in the former Paolo Pini psychiatric hospital, in the Affori district of Milan, in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health of the Niguarda hospital. The idea was to transform a symbol of isolation into a place of encounter, where professional artists and people with mental distress could work together in the Botteghe d’Arte (art workshops).

Between 1994 and 1995 some forty Italian and foreign artists were invited to create a work on the walls of the pavilions and in the park, often involving patients. The museum opened on 25 May 1995, and since then the collection has grown to include works by more than 150 artists, among them Enrico Baj, Emilio Tadini, Gunter Brus and Martin Disler.

The permanent collection consists of murals, installations and sculptures placed in the park and inside some of the pavilions, alongside works created jointly by artists and visitors to the Botteghe. The MAPP is the art section of the Museo regionale della psichiatria, owned by the Niguarda hospital, which also includes the archive of the clinical records of the Paolo Pini. In 2007 Regione Lombardia recognised it as a museum collection (raccolta museale).
