Temporarily closedAdmission €3 Wheelchair accessible
Temporarily closed (expected until 2026-12-05). The museums of the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore have been closed since 19 October 2026 for the dismantling of a temporary exhibition, the restoration of the permanent routes and maintenance work in the palace. Reopening is planned for Saturday 5 December 2026.

About the museum

A first archaeological museum was set up in Pieve di Cadore in the second half of the 19th century and brought great prestige to the town, but it was largely dispersed during the 1917 invasion, when many objects of archaeological value disappeared. The present museum, a compact display housed on the second floor of the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Cadore in Piazza Tiziano, was inaugurated on 2 August 1953.

The core of the display comes from the excavations of the sanctuary of Lagole, at Calalzo di Cadore, begun in 1949 following a report by Giovanni Battista Frescura and continued throughout the 1950s, also with financial support from the Magnifica Comunità. The place of worship, linked to sulphurous springs and frequented from the pre-Roman to the Roman age, yielded bronze figurines, weapons, knives, votive bells and handles of simpula (ritual ladles) with more than seventy inscriptions in the Venetic language: documentation second in the Veneto only to that of Este.

The rooms also preserve materials from other excavations in the area, including the mosaic floor and hypocaust heating system of a Roman villa discovered in Pieve di Cadore in 1954, and finds from Valle di Cadore and Domegge, acquired in the following decades.
