Temporarily closed Partially accessible
Temporarily closed (expected until 2026-12-05). The museums of the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore, including the Casa natale, are closed to the public from 19 October to Saturday 5 December 2026 for refurbishment and maintenance works at the Palazzo; regular opening resumes on 5 December.

About the museum

The house where Tiziano Vecellio was born, in Pieve di Cadore, survived the devastation caused by German soldiers during the War of the League of Cambrai in the 16th century, and was the typical dwelling of a distinguished local family of notaries, timber merchants and administrators. The present building is the result of works commissioned by the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore, owner since 1927, and carried out in 1928–30, when the 18th-century annex hiding the ancient façade was demolished and the small 15th-century doors and windows became visible again.

The house has two storeys of masonry, an irregular plan, galleries, an external wooden staircase and a pitched roof covered with wooden shingles. On the ground floor a large room with a wooden floor houses reproductions of the drawings by Tiziano and his circle from the Uffizi collection, and documentation on the painter. A steep wooden staircase leads to the upper floor, with five rooms where Tiziano probably spent his childhood: the kitchen with the large hearth, two bedrooms and the Stua, panelled in wood and with a coffered ceiling.

In these rooms the five children of Gregorio Vecellio and Lucia were born: Francesco, Tiziano, Orsa, Caterina and Dorotea. The house was reopened on 23 January 2026 after a structural and conservation restoration lasting a year and a half, financed by the Interreg VI-A Italy-Austria project “Musei per tutti tra innovazione e tradizione” (Museums for All between Innovation and Tradition).
