About the museum
The Messner Mountain Museum Dolomites stands on the summit of Monte Rite, at 2,181 metres above sea level, between Cortina d'Ampezzo and Cadore. The building is a former First World War military fort, transformed into a museum by Reinhold Messner and opened in 2002 as one of the museums in his network devoted to the mountain world.
The architectural transformation combines old and new parts: glass structures recalling the crystalline form of dolomite are grafted onto the fort's walls, and the windows open onto a panorama of the surrounding peaks, including the Pelmo and the Antelao. The exhibition route tells the story of the exploration of the Dolomites through cartographers, mountaineers, climbing pioneers and scientists.
The rooms house a gallery of paintings with views of the Dolomites from Romanticism to the present day, fossils recalling the tropical sea from which the mountains originated, maps and historical equipment. According to the museum's website, the museum remains closed in the 2026 season.
