About the museum

The museum opened in 1974 following the donation to the Regole d’Ampezzo by Rosa Braun, widow of the Cortina collector Mario Rimoldi. Artists such as de Pisis, de Chirico, Sironi, Campigli and Music, who frequented the Ampezzo basin, formed a rewarding friendship with Rimoldi. By 1941, when the first Mostra delle collezioni d’arte contemporanea opened in Cortina, the collection was already well defined, with works by de Pisis, Morandi, Semeghini, Rosai, Campigli, Sironi, Garbari, Severini, Tosi and Guidi.

After the war, experimental works by artists who were already represented with figurative paintings entered the collection, along with painters linked to the Veneto milieu, such as Cadorin, Cesetti, Saetti, Tomea and Depero, and protagonists of new movements, including Guttuso, Corpora, Crippa, Dova, Morlotti, Santomaso and Vedova. Rimoldi also discovered foreign artists such as Kokoschka, Léger, Villon and Zadkine.

The Italian Ministry of Culture has declared the collection to be of cultural interest, describing it as the outcome of fifty years of collecting and one of the most significant groups in Italy for 20th-century art, with masterpieces by Savinio, Garbari, Depero and Guttuso and key holdings for the study of de Pisis, Sironi, de Chirico, Semeghini, Tomea, Tosi and Campigli. The museum is housed in the Ciasa de ra Regoles palace on Corso Italia, in the centre of Cortina, near the parish church.
