About the museum
The castle of Monteriggioni dates from the 1220s and 1230s and was founded by the Republic of Siena to defend its borders against its rival Florence. The two cities fought for centuries; in 1554 the Sienese captain Giovannino Zeti surrendered to the Florentine army besieging the hill, and from then on the walls lost their defensive function.
The educational route “Monteriggioni in Arme”, entered from Piazza Alighieri 23, is divided into four rooms, each devoted to a century between the 13th and the 16th and to the role of the Republic of Siena as a military outpost. On display are replicas of medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour, made with ancient techniques based on originals and contemporary depictions, and models illustrating siege machines and techniques. Bilingual panels explain local history and defensive techniques; visitors are invited to handle and try on some weapons and parts of armour.
The visit also includes the walkways on the walls, footbridges built in the early 2000s near the two gates of the village, which ideally follow a medieval patrol path. They offer views over the Chianti, the Valdelsa and, on clear days, the towers of San Gimignano. At present only the southern side is partly open.
