About the museum

The collection is attached to the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Staggia Senese, a hamlet of Poggibonsi. The building has Romanesque origins and was extensively restored in the early twentieth century. The castle of Staggia, important for its strategic position, was long contested between the Sienese and the Florentines; for this reason, between the 14th and 16th centuries, works for the church were commissioned both from Florence and from Siena.

The masterpiece is Antonio del Pollaiolo's “Maddalena comunicata dagli angeli” (Mary Magdalene receiving communion from angels), painted in the 1460s, which gives the museum its name. The route also includes Francesco Botticini's Adorazione dei Magi (Adoration of the Magi), a Madonna and Child from the Sienese area of the mid-14th century, a Gothic monstrance in gilded copper from the second half of the 14th century, a Visitation by Giovanni Maria Butteri dated 1574 and a Christ in Pietà by Arcangelo Salimbeni dated 1579.
