About the museum
After the Second World War, Reana del Rojale became the Friulian centre of cartoccio work, that is, the working of maize bracts, called “scus” in Friulian. In 1964 the Cooperativa Artigiani Cartocciai Friulani was founded at Cortale; alongside traditional baskets it produced dolls, decorative objects and accessories. The cooperative closed in 1987, but some craftswomen have continued to pass on the craft, also thanks to workshops in schools.
The permanent exhibition, set up in the former primary school of Reana (civic centre), gathers over 300 works in cartoccio and wicker and shows how a humble, easy-to-work material can give rise to very varied and elaborate objects. The “Scus dal Rojal” brand and the management of the spaces are entrusted to the Pro Loco del Rojale, whose volunteers accompany visitors and school groups.
A second connected space, the Vetrina del Rojale in Remugnano, displays and sells contemporary creations and hosts exhibitions by local artists. The exhibition of cartoccio and wicker is open on the same days and at the same times as the Vetrina.
