About the museum

The Museo Archeologico Medievale di Attimis is the first regional museum devoted to the many aspects of life in a feudal castle, in the eastern foothills of Friuli, between the Torre and Natisone valleys. The area has numerous fortresses, including the two castles of Attimis, Attimis Superiore (the older one) and Attimis Inferiore, and the castle of Partistagno.

The exhibition begins with the history of archaeological investigation methods and the architectural and technological evolution of fortifications, with a model of the typical structure of a feudal castle and an “Ottagono” (Octagon) room that represents the nine castles of the area between Cividale and Nimis. The display cases show ceramic, glass, metal and organic material recovered from excavations, woodworking objects, coins and the striking “spada nella roccia” (sword in the rock).

The upper floor is devoted to hunting, fishing, livestock rearing and agriculture in the feudal period, as well as a rare collection of weapons and defensive armour and medieval art, including the oldest wooden Madonna in Friuli, from the mid-13th century. A learning area lets visitors try practical activities such as minting a medieval coin, reconstructing a stratigraphic section and working with ceramics.
