About the museum
Spazio Brazzà, opened on 30 September 2011, brings together two museums in the castle complex of Brazzà, in Brazzacco di Moruzzo. The medieval village has a chapel of San Leonardo predating the 10th century and an 11th-century castle, along with buildings from the 15th to the 17th century; from the 12th century it was a seat of the Savorgnan family and a Venetian outpost on the northern border. The park, now more than a century old, was created at the end of the 19th century by Cora Slocomb.
The Museo Storico Pietro di Brazzà Savorgnan is dedicated to the explorer who founded Brazzaville, capital of today's Republic of the Congo, and to other members of the family, including Ulrich von Hassell, a figure of the German resistance during the Second World War, Cora Slocomb, Giacomo di Brazzà Savorgnan and Fey von Hassell. It also includes an exhibition of African art from the collection of Detalmo and Corrado Pirzio-Biroli.
The Museo Artistico Štěpán Zavřel commemorates the children's illustrator born in Prague (1932–1999). The permanent exhibition presents over two hundred originals – woodcuts from the 1960s, studies, drawings, animation materials and advertising graphics – and the plates for all his illustrated books, from “Il Pesce Magico” (1964) to “In cammino con Dio” (1996). The archive holds more than three thousand originals donated by the family. The scientific director is the art historian Marina Tonzig.
