About the museum
The exhibition was founded in 1981 to collect and preserve finds located on the surface in the municipal territory of Porcari and in neighbouring areas. Over the years it became a permanent exhibition with educational aims, to which a collection of minerals and fossils donated to the municipality was added.
Today it is on the first floor of the former Collegio Cavanis, the building that has housed the Biblioteca comunale since 2004. The Aule didattiche archeologiche (archaeological teaching rooms), set up and inaugurated in 2014, are intended for workshops with compulsory-education schools and are dedicated in particular to the archaeology of the Piana di Lucca (Lucca Plain).
The rooms contain numerous educational dioramas and a few display cases with a small selection of finds, partly copies and partly originals from the excavations of the Fossa Nera archaeological site.
