About the museum
The villa, originally called Villa di Segromigno, first belonged to the Benedetti family, then to the Cenami and finally to the Mansi, wealthy Lucchese silk merchants who acquired it in the 17th century. The design of the façade is due to the architect Muzio Oddi of Urbino, with a central block set slightly back from the side wings, a raised portico and a double staircase.
Inside, in the central hall and in the rooms of the noble floor, there are frescoes and paintings by the Lucchese painter Stefano Tofanelli, executed in the late 18th century with mythological scenes linked to the myth of Apollo. In the 18th century the garden was remodelled to a design by Filippo Juvarra; the fishpond with its balustrade and statues of woodland creatures survive from it.
The park, reached from the stable courtyard, preserves small waterfalls, the Grotta del Bagno di Diana (Grotto of the Bath of Diana) and an English-style garden with large historic trees. A local legend tells that the ghost of Lucida Mansi is said to haunt the villa and the garden.
