About the museum
Villa Torrigiani, in the hamlet of Camigliano in Capannori, is one of the best-known Baroque villas of the Lucca area. The Renaissance building, with its giardino ad orto (kitchen garden), belonged to the Buonvisi family from 1536; in 1636 it passed to the marquis Nicolao Santini, ambassador of the Republic of Lucca to Louis XIV, who, inspired by Versailles, transformed it into a theatrical Baroque residence with large fountains, parterres and the Giardino-Teatro di Flora.
The theatrical façade, decorated with statues on three levels, is the work of Alfonso Torregiani. Inside, the frescoes by the quadratura painter Pietro Scorzini and the paintings by Vincenzo Dandini decorate rooms that retain the Santini family’s original furnishings. A long avenue of cypresses, almost a kilometre long, leads up to the villa. In the park, beside the fountains and the Grotta dei Venti (Grotto of the Winds) with its water game, monumental trees, exotic plants and old camellias were introduced in the nineteenth century, giving the garden a more romantic tone.
The villa, recognised as a national monument, is still lived in by descendants of the Santini and Torrigiani families, who open it to the public. The first opening to visitors was due to Princess Simonetta Colonna di Stigliano, born Marchioness Torrigiani.
