About the museum
The shrine of the Beata Vergine del Castello stands on the hill of Fiorano, on the site of the former castle. It was built in 1634 by Duke Francesco I d’Este to a design by Bartolomeo Avanzini and is the symbol of the town. It houses a 15th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child, traditionally detached from the castle’s entrance portal.
The image is believed to protect the town from fires, attacks and plague, and many ex-votos commemorate the graces received. The church has a Greek-cross plan, a central dome, two bell towers and two sacristies. The interior decoration is 17th-century, while the dome frescoes were restored in the 19th century.
The collection of ex-votos is visible together with the image of the Madonna before and after liturgical celebrations; at other times a reservation is required. Every 8 September, the patronal feast of the Birth of Mary, the shrine is a place of pilgrimage.
