About the museum
The Palazzo Ducale di Sassuolo is one of the most important Baroque residences in northern Italy. In 1634 Duke Francesco I d’Este commissioned the architect Bartolomeo Avanzini to transform the old family castle into a court residence, with mural paintings, stucco decoration, sculptures and fountains.
The palace has been managed by the Ministero della Cultura since 2004, when it took over responsibility for it, and it forms part of the Gallerie Estensi. The visit route runs through the decorated rooms and up to the first floor, which can be reached by lift; the palace also hosts temporary exhibitions.
